Publisher's description

Academic institutions are facing a crisis in scholarly publishing at multiple levels. This title is both a provocation to think more broadly about the academy's future and an argument for re-conceiving that future in more communally-oriented ways.

Experimental aspects:

Planned Obsolescence springs from the author Kathleen Fitzpatrick’s hands-on experiments in new modes of scholarly communication through MediaCommons, the digital scholarly network she co-founded. The book was openly reviewed using CommentPress, a blog-based publishing engine developed by the Institute for the Future of the Book. CommentPress promotes dialogue with long-form texts in two ways. Firstly, writers can structure texts in linkable chunks, allowing them to make linear and non-linear connections within the text and other sources. Secondly, the platform enables writers and readers to comment on the document at various levels of granularity, from the entire document to specific pages and paragraphs.
